Spending changes
Spending categories shift over time, and the card that pays most shifts with them.
Signup bonuses
A signup bonus needs a minimum spend in the first few months, so timing of large purchases matters.
More than one card
Different cards for different categories can pay more, but rewards only help if every balance is paid in full.

You enter what you spend in each category in a month and choose a time horizon. Each card has a sample rate per category, and the lab turns your spending into rewards over that horizon. Two switches add a signup bonus and subtract annual fees, then the lab ranks the cards by net value. The rates are samples stored in the tool. Card offers change, and this is not an application.
Not if you carry one. A 2% reward on $1,000 of spending is $20. A month of interest on a $1,000 balance at 24% APR is also about $20, and it repeats every month the balance stays. Rewards only help if every balance is paid in full.
With the signup bonus switch on, a card's bonus counts only if your monthly spending reaches one third of the spending the card requires, because the lab assumes three months to meet it. Points are valued at 1 cent each. Real bonus terms and point values vary by card.
