Full estimate pays this year's whole tax as you go. Safe harbor with no prior-year tax entered is 90% of this year's tax: $3,610 for the year, less withholding. If you file by February 1, 2027 and pay the balance, the January payment is not required.
Educational estimate for tax year 2026. Self-employment tax is 15.3% of 92.35% of net profit (12.4% Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base, shared with wages, plus 2.9% Medicare), and half of it is deducted from income. Income tax uses the Paycheck lab's 2026 brackets and standard deduction. Not modeled: the qualified business income (QBI) deduction, which can lower income tax; additional Medicare tax; credits; state tax; and uneven income across quarters. Due dates move to the next business day when one lands on a weekend or holiday. Form 1040-ES (2026) · Schedule SE · Social Security wage base
Net earnings are $24,000 times 92.35%, or $22,164. Self-employment tax at 15.3% is $3,391. Half of that, $1,696, comes off income, leaving $22,304 of adjusted gross income and $6,204 of taxable income after the $16,100 standard deduction. Income tax on that is $620. The 2026 total is $4,012, which is $1,003 a quarter and about 17% of each payment. With $4,000 withheld from a job instead, the same lab shows a smaller quarterly amount because withholding counts as tax already paid.

People on a 12% federal bracket often set aside 12%. Self-employment tax adds 15.3% of 92.35% of net profit on top, so the share of each payment that goes to tax is often well above the bracket. In the example, a taxable income of $6,204 sits in the 10% bracket, and the set-aside is still about 17% of profit because self-employment tax is most of the bill.
Form 1040-ES says to pay if you expect to owe at least $1,000 for the year after subtracting withholding and refundable credits, and expect withholding and credits to be below the smaller of 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's. The lab shows $0 when the tax left after withholding is under $1,000.
April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027. When a date lands on a weekend or holiday, the payment is on time the next business day. The January payment is not required if you file by February 1, 2027 and pay the balance.
If your adjusted gross income for the prior year was over $150,000 ($75,000 married filing separately), the prior-year safe harbor is 110% of last year's tax instead of 100%.
Yes. Withholding from wages counts toward the tax you owe for the year. Enter it and the lab subtracts it from the quarterly amounts.
